Woods & Wrong get it Right!

The first products launched within the new Established & Sons ‘Collaborations’ programme are the ‘Night Table’ and ‘Chest of Drawers’ by British artist Richard Woods and designer Sebastian Wrong.

The design of the pieces derives from the style of mid century post war modernist utility furniture that championed the abilities of plywood as a new building material. The emphasis is form, function, construction and material with the absence of decoration.

Larusi Rugs – Modernist Link

hb_aug06_01 woi112005a

Architects such as Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ray and Charles Eames and furniture designer Poul Kjaerholm offset new materials with fine wood, leather and other natural finishes and furnished their domestic interiors with Moroccan rugs and other non-western art.

They appreciated the simple geometric patterns and symbols, the earthy tones of the High Atlas rugs and the subtle plain beige and brown carpets of the Beni Ouarain tribe as a perfect counterpoint to the clear lines and volumes of their architecture.

A Room with a View – no.3

elle0308 elle030802

Another one of my favourite rooms which was featured in the March 2008 edition of Elle Decoration.

“A mix of warm woods, tactile furniture and animal hide rugs lend this industrial space that cosy ‘want-to-be-there’ factor”

My favourite bits include the ‘Barcelona Day Bed’ and vintage Seventies lamp.

How cool was Caulfield?

Alot of Caulfield’s work was based on domestic interiors and were often lifted directly from 1950s interior decorating magazines.

He was born in London in 1936, and spent part of his childhood in Bolton Lancashire before moving back to London after WWII. He worked in the design department of Crosse & Blackwell, (where one of his tasks was varnishing the chocolates on display) and spent three years national service with the Royal Air Force.

In 1956 he attended Chelsea School of Art and in 1960 undertook postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art. Here Caulfield was identified, along with the previous year’s intake (David Hockney, Ron Kitaj, Allen Jones and Derek Boshier) as one of the ‘Pop’ artists.

Some works by Caulfield held in the Saatchi collection were destroyed in the now infamous, a fire in a storage warehouse on 24 May 2004.

Patrick Caulfield passed away in 2005, and is buried in London’s Highgate Cemetery.

Ernest Race Armchair

race_arm_500

In 1954, Ernest Race was awarded the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale for his BA3 chair, which was designed 9 years earlier.

The BA3 dining chairs were, for ease of assembly and shipping, made up of seven interchangeable parts.

Initially made from sand-cast aluminium, and later made from die-cast aluminium, the BA3 chair was at the cutting edge of post-war design.

Definately in my top 10 chairs list… that post will be coming soon!
